3.13.16

“Today at brunch, Coach Casey and Darrington Hobson of the Warriors came to school. They played tag with a lot of people. It was funny. Then, I needed to go,” whispered Alisun.
“Today on our field trip, we went in a car. We lined up outside the bowling alley, then went inside to get our bowling shoes. Then, we signed our names in and rolled the ball to play. Next, we walked to the Boardwalk to look for machines. It started to rain, so we went in the arcade and saw other machines. Finally, we went back to school in our car groups,” reported Bailey.
“Today, I did square dancing. It was fun! I learned a lot! After that, we had free time. We listened to a couple of songs,” reported Felicia.
“Today at Friday Courses, we had Hour of Code. We have homework that is very hard. Then, we went to coding. I got six levels into the Minecraft. On the sixth level you have to build a house. It was very hard. I couldn't finish it. Then it was time to end courses,” encoded Ian.

Wow! It is almost the end of the winter trimester! In the Force and Motion theme, we’ve been exploring each of the six simple machines (lever, screw, wedge, inclined plane, pulley and wheel and axle). Before we started a combination of free exploration and guided investigations with the six simple machines, the students played with balance, gravity, centripetal force, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

·      Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.
·      The force acting on an object is equal to the mass of that object times its acceleration.
·      For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

¡Guauu!

Lysa visited the Sea class with a box full of antique toys and toys she and her friend have collected on their world travels. Several of the students commented that bringing the toys helped inspire them to start building their toys for the Toy Museum at Learning Celebration. Let me know if you need another copy of the family homework assignment.

Andrea Tanaka was a guest teacher last week in the Sea Class! As a bike expert, he helped us identify the simple machines on Zuki’s bike, and then each student rode the bike on a stationary training to feel the assistive force of gears and hand brakes.

This upcoming Friday, scientists from UCSC’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) will bring four centers of physics demonstrations for all Monarch classes. Thank you to Ayala for getting this whole thing started! I’ll try to remember to take lots of photos and video and post them on the next blog!

The Force and Motion theme lends itself especially well to integration into English Language Arts (Communication Workshop). The students chose a topic related to forces, motion, or machines and are finishing up an informational writing project with paragraphs, topic sentences, and illustrations. Some students chose to use the Chromebooks and others are hand writing their information books. The students are excited to share their information writing with you at their student led conferences this and next week.

And now… this week in preview.
