1.3.16

"Today at Multi-Age, we did a lot of different things. We played banana tag and checked off our checklists. We made the finishing touches on our displays, and used the iPad to translate Swahili language," reported Julia.

Thank you for participating in the Heritage Faire Learning Celebration in December. The food you shared was 'off the hook', as the young people say.

Now it's already time to dive right in to the next thematic adventure: Force and Motion. Here is the part of the Unit Plan that shows some of the 'big ideas' that will be experienced through exploration, guided exploration, and Writers and Readers Workshops. Of course the students will be using their scientific and mathematical skills and observations during their inquiries and explorations!

I was able to meet with John Rible over the Winter Break to brainstorm indoor and outdoor activities that the students might enjoy; my notes are below this table.

Established Goals:

Force & Motion 2016

Understandings:

Force affects the movement of an object.

How we use force and motion day to day.

Scientists use the inquiry process to study force & motion.

Many different people contributed to our understanding of force & motion.

Essential Questions:

What is the effect of force on the movement of an object?

How do we use force and motion every day?

What do scientists who study force and motion do?

Why is it important to study force and motion?
Students will know…
  • The steps of an inquiry (observing, questioning, planning, gathering data, analyzing, communicating) Update with NGSS lens
  • What a force is (any push or pull on an object)
  • Force affects motion
  • Newton’s Laws of Motion:  list
    • Law of Inertia: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.
    • The force acting on an object is equal to the mass of that object times its acceleration (F = ma) [Has to do with how the velocity of an object changes (acceleration) when a force is applied to it.]
    • For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
  • Movement of an object can be changed
  • Amount of force affects movement and stopping movement
  • The concept of gravity as well as several other forces (magnetism, friction, drag, lift)
  • What the simple machines are: (lever, pulley, wedge, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw)

Will be able to:
  • Use the steps of an inquiry to answer a question

  • Observe, describe/demonstrate how the movement of an object can be changed

  • List a variety of forces

  • Recognize simple machines

  • Name scientists and their contributions

Notes from meeting with John Rible 12.31.15:

archimedies screw in Make it Work Machines
use spools to make pulleys
pantograph in make it work machines
gyroscope and effort
swing bucket of water to demo centrifigal force - force to equal gravity
Which ball will drop first? drop differnt material balls and listen for what hits first
How can i make this paper fall faster? go further?
do planes need engines? why? why not? when do they? when do they not need engines?
ballistic vs. powered flight?
when is the force on the catapult?
potential energy investigations
investigations with ramps and poles-what is easier?
stand of platform, scale to measure force vertical lift vs. ramp pull
screw is an inclined plane wrapped around - water screw  packing foam pieces
pulleys perceived force needed to lift - John has 4 pulleys - bowsain chair
1 pulley vs. 2 twice as much rope is pulled but with half the work
levers in the body
make a balanced mobile
spirograph , bikes/gears, extension levels
bike pedal = levels
play marbles
take magnetism out
using shims and a brick lift an inch off the ground, shims, brick, hammer or stick
how can a wedge filling a space and creating a space
catch a ball thrown hard and move your hand back it doesn’t hurt as much  elasctic and inelastic collisions
drop of clay ball and rubber ball to show energy exchange  jumping and body more engery exchange with bouncy ball youtube

That's all for tonight, but in subsequent posts I'll go into more detail about Readers, Writers, and Math Workshops foci.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or suggestions: together, we can find solutions!

And now: Week 1 of the Winter 2016 term!
Y ahora: Semana 1 del término Invierno 2016!
