1.10.16

"Today my brother is turning seven. I made him a card. I also have a present for him. We are having a surprise dinner for him at Sushi Garden," explained Marley.

"Today I got my new line number. My line number is six. I like it better than my old one because it's closer to the front. I got my new job and job partner. When it was Math Workshop, I played a subtraction game. It was fun," reported Layla.

Wow! What a great week! The Sea Class participated in several Tribes activities including a kind of PE game called "That's Me; That's Us!" Students 'identified' as people who have touched snow, like chard, make their best effort to cooperate, who think of themselves as working towards leadership, etc. We found so many things that we have in common! I was very impressed by the 'I used to; Now I am' poems the students wrote; one of my favorite stanzas is "I used to play in the whitewash; Now I ride the face." What a way to exemplify growth! The next day we wrote a class poem called "We used to; Now we..." One of my favorites is "We used to need supervision during yoga, but now we can lead sun salutations on our own." Amazing reflection and appreciation for our progress and growth!

¡Guauu!

Next week we embark on our first week of Force and Motion; we will begin with exploring with pendulums and work into exploring simple machines. The first week of February is our first week of Multi-Age fun; the Sea classroom will make CATAPULTS! I'm so excited! I'll attach the unit plan with the email link to this blog...

In Writers Workshop the Sea group has begun rehearsing and organizing expository writing. For the first piece, writers are choosing a topic on which they are experts, and the second published piece will be on a Force and Motion topic like a specific simple machine, how motion and force affect human lives, or explains and discusses the significance of a scientific issue as it relates to everyday life.

Readers are learning how to manage reading non-fiction texts with tables of contents, indexes, charts and graphs, pictures and captions, and glossaries. Students are learning to SLOW DOWN their reading, ask questions, make notes, categorize information, and apply the Habits of Mind (Connection, Evidence, Relevance, Point of View, and Supposition) to what they are reading.

In Math this week, students will construct sundials as a means of learning to tell time, understand elapsed time, and the development of humans' understanding of time over millennia. Over the course of the trimester, we'll learn about analog and digital clocks, timelines, and the mechanics of clocks. Of course, we'll continue with sharing strategies for solving word problems, practice our mental math skills, and learn and play LOTS of games that will introduce and support our understanding of place value, subtraction, and working with equal groups (multiplication and division).
