5.8.16

“Today I played soccer with Jahmai, Naima, Jaden, Otis, Isa, Ronan, and some other people. The other team won, and then brunch was over,” reported Isaac.
“Today at Theme, we played Go-Go-Im. Go-gos are apricot pits and you try to toss the pits into holes in a box. At class meeting, we shared a snack of mixed fruit,” said Jaden.
“Today at Theme, we played the Royal Game of Ur again, because it was too hard the first time. Then, we went outside to play game from Israel called Sick, Dying, Dead. I thought it was like dodgeball, but you never get out. You get reborn. You can get out of the way, but you can't leave the circle,” Jahmai said, all creeped out.
The Sea class has been both having fun and frustration with learning new games from regions around the world and throughout time. This upcoming week we will travel to China, both ancient and modern. On Tuesday we will read aloud Mai and the Spirit Dragon and play Catch the Dragon's Tail before Aurora’s Exit Criteria practice. In the afternoon, we will learn the complexities of Chinese Jump Rope! On Thursday and Friday, we will try out the super popular Mahjong, and the ancient board game of Go. It’s a complicated strategy game, and we are finding that our first time trying out new games that took hundreds or thousands of years to evolve, can be frustrating, but everyone is giving it their best effort.

Our Games theme field trip is also evolving, and in its final form, requires no drivers! We do, however require two or three chaperones to walk with the class to Mythic Games for Victor’s Game Rotations, lunch at San Lorenzo Park, and Lawn Bowling! If you’re interested and available, please contact Michelle Easter (lme73@me.com or 408-438-0129) this week (there’s a special treat for chaperones!).

Morning Meeting:
Theme:
Play Seven Stones again

Play Kaaoa - Vulture and Crows

1. Players decide who will play the vulture, and who will play the crows.
2. The board is empty in the beginning. All pieces are set beside the board.
3. Players alternate their turns throughout the game.
4. Drop phase: Crows start first, and one crow is dropped anywhere on the board. Crows continue to drop one piece per turn on any vacant point until all seven crows have been dropped which requires seven turns. Afterwards, the crows can begin to move.
After the first crow is dropped, the vulture is dropped by the other player on any vacant point on the board. On the vulture's next turn, it can move and capture crows.
5. Move phase: After all seven crows have been dropped, the crows can move one space onto a vacant point per turn following the pattern on the board. Crows cannot capture.
Vultures can either move one space onto a vacant point per turn following the pattern on the board, or capture one crow per turn. Capture is where a vulture can jump over an adjacent crow piece and land on a vacant point on the other side. The jump must follow the pattern of the board, and be in a straight line. Multiple captures are not allowed.
To prevent a repetitive stalemate, an extra rule is usually employed which says that a player cannot move a piece so that a position of the pieces on the board is repeated.
A game is won by the vulture if it captures 4 crows. A game is won by the crows if they succeed in preventing any vulture from being able to move.

Morning Meeting
Theme:
Read aloud Mai and the Spirit Dragon (kindle book)
Play Catch the Dragon's Tail
The children all form a line with their hands on the shoulders of the child in front. The first in line is the dragon's head, the last in line is the dragon's tail.
The dragon's head then tries to catch the tail by maneuvering the line around so that he can tag the last player. All the players in the middle do their best to hinder the dragon's head. Don't let the line break!
When the head catches the tail, the tail player takes the front position and becomes the new dragon's head. All the other players move back one position.

Morning Meeting
Theme:
play Go 5x5

1.                  The board is empty at the onset of the game (unless players agree to place a handicap).
2.                  Black makes the first move, after which White and Black alternate.
3.                  A move consists of placing one stone of one's own color on an empty intersection on the board.
4.                  A player may pass their turn at any time.
5.                  A stone or solidly connected group of stones of one color is captured and removed from the board when all the intersections directly adjacent to it are occupied by the enemy. (Capture of the enemy takes precedence over self-capture.)
6.                  No stone may be played so as to recreate a former board position.
7.                  Two consecutive passes end the game. However, since black begins, white must end the game.
8.                  A player's territory consists of all the points the player has either occupied or surrounded.
9.                  The player with more territory wins.
