“Today at Math Workshop, my group and I did a CGI. problem. After CGI, we read a really weird book called Thunder Cake,” said Jasper.

The Sea class had fun learning games from China last week. This week, we are moving further east to learn some games that Native American children have been playing for thousands of years. We have a shortened week due to Friday’s field trip, and Kevin Hulin will be a guest teacher on Tuesday to teach us the globally popular game Texas Hold Em’! I’ve been so engrossed with playing the games that I haven’t been taking very many photos…
We are nearing the end of Workshops; our last day will be Friday, May 27, so the next two weeks will be a lot of summative (end of year) assessment. Please help your children get enough sleep and have plenty of food packed. Several students came to me last week asking for more food since their lunch boxes were empty by 12:00!

Our Games field trip is this Friday! We will leave school and walk down Water Street to the County Building, walk along the levee, and cross River Street to Mythic Games. There, we will rotate through four or five games chosen especially for our group. Afterwards, we’ll lunch and have some free play at San Lorenzo Park. The lovely people at the Santa Cruz Lawn Bowling Club will give us a little history of the game, and demonstrate it. Then, we will get a chance to try it ourselves! We will end the day by walking back up Water Street in time for 3:00 pick up. I don’t know who has signed up to walk with us yet, but if you’re interested in learning some new games, please contact Michelle Easter or myself.

Stick Passing Game
1.                  Arrange the students in a circle. Give one child a bone, and give each of the other students a stick (e.g., popsicle stick, twig).
2.                  Keep a beat with a drum. Players pass the sticks and bone in time with the beat in the following fashion: Tap the stick (or bone) on the ground (first beat), tap it again (second beat), pass it to the player on your right while receiving from the player on the left (third beat), change the new stick (or bone) from the left hand to the right hand (fourth beat).
3.                  When the music stops, the player holding the bone gives the bone to the player on his right, then leaves the circle, joining the rhythm makers and keeping beat with drums, bells, or hand clapping. The winner of the game is the last child to remain in the circle.
Ring Toss
2 plastic lids, one larger
Green, blue, and white yarn
Scissors
1.                  Cut out the center of each lid leaving a plastic ring.

Morning Meeting
Theme:
Pima (Southwest)
VAPUTTA 12-30 players, usually boys
Equipment: one small pebble
Play: The players are divided into teams and a leader is chosen for each. The teams line up facing each other a few feet apart. A goal is marked off about fifty yards distant form the first player on each team. The leader of the team that has first turn walks along behind his players, carrying a pebble or some small object in his hand. He pretends to place it in the hand of several players as he passes along, and actually does place it in one hand. When he reaches the end of the line, the leader of the opposite side guesses which player had the pebble or object. If he guesses right, he takes the object to hide in the hands of his team. If he guesses wrong, the player at the far end of the line having the object runs and jumps over the upheld leg of the man at the head of the line. This moves his side one man and the length of the jump nearer to the goal. The same leader hides the pebble once more and the play continues. The team that fools the other team the most and can jump the greatest distances will reach the goal first and win.

Stick Game
4 popsicle sticks or tongue depressors
12 counting sticks (toothpicks)
Permanent marker
1.                  Mark one side of one popsicle stick with a design. Leave the other side blank. Be creative with your designs.
2.                  Mark another popsicle stick with another design, leaving the other side blank.
3.                  Mark the remaining two popsicle sticks the same, leaving the opposite side blank.
4.                  Either two players can play or two teams can play. Each player plays against the person sitting across from him or her.
5.                  Use the 12 toothpicks for keeping score. Place them in a pile between the two players.
6.                  To play, hold the four stick dice (popsicle sticks) in your hand, and then drop them to the ground.
7.                  Count your score according to the number of points for each stick combination. Take that many counting sticks.
8.                  When the counting sticks are all taken from the pile on the ground, the players should begin taking them from each other’s pile. The first player (or team) to earn all 12 sticks wins the game.
