1.24.16

Sea Class Blog 1.24.16
“I have been noticing that I've been a good leader at Monarch School. I am teaching others to follow the Bill of Rights by being an example for everyone else. I also get to get better at including others and learning new ways to be a leader,” said Naima.
Tomorrow, Monday, January 25, ALL THE TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE AT AN ALL DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING. JULIE RODRIGUEZ WILL BE IN THE SEA CLASS ALL DAY!
A big thanks to Wendy, Jeff, Ayala and Mickie who faced the rain to help students walk safely to the Bicycle Trip in support of our study of Force and Motion. Aaron Jacobs, our host and owner of the shop, answered MANY questions about wrenches and measuring devices that bike mechanics use every day. We discussed levers, center of gravity, amount of work needed to do a job with and without a tool, the perils of stripped bolts, and the effects of friction. Students felt the effects of gyroscope action, and we were treated to a demonstration of rock hopping by Matt Meyer. Unfortunately, I didn’t get many photos or video, but here’s a nice video of Matt doing what he loves most!

This week, the Sea Class will explore the concept of balance by experimenting with applying weights to objects in order to balance them, finding balanced and unbalanced postures with our bodies, and investigating how the shape of objects affects their balance via the center of gravity.
In Writers Workshop, authors of information books will begin drafting thier first pieces on laptop computers this week, and will be introduced to ‘commenting’, offering ‘friendly feedback’ on the work of their peers. Writers will complete at least two writing pieces this trimester: the first is on a topic of students’ choices, and the second will be on a topic related to the theme Force and Motion, and may include inventors or inventions. We have spent several weeks trying out different organizational structures for subtopics, as well as ‘tricks of the trade’ like using Pros and Cons, Compare and Contrast, and Cause and Effect to help the reader understand the topic better.
In Math Workshop, students are learning to tell time on analog clocks; learning about equal portions of hours, minutes and seconds; and over the next few weeks, how to calculate elapsed time. All this while they continue to build more strategies for interpreting word problems, deciding which operations are appropriate, and using their knowledge of arithmetic facts to solve the problems, through CGI problems and games.
The afternoons are thin in terms of classroom volunteers in the Sea class; if you ever have the flexibility of being at school from 12:45-1:45, the students and I would greatly appreciate some extra support with small group activities. Thanks to UCSC Education 180 students Becca (who is returning despite the fact that she isn’t even earning credits this quarter!) and Vincent, we have a full house on Thursday afternoons!
OK OK enough; here’s the plan for the week ahead:

1.19.16

“Today at lunch, I played tag with Otis, Ronan, Somanna, Julia, Maya, and some other people. First we were playing on the pavement, and then we played on the field,” said Max.
“Today at lunch and brunch, I played basketball with Zoe. She taught me how to shoot a basket. Then, Zoe and I took turns dribbling. Then it was time to go inside,” sweated Maya.
I love to hear about mixed gender games at recesses!
Tomorrow’s field trip feels a little nebulous due to the weather and so many permission slips missing, so here’s the plan:
Before school, I need to drive by Central Park again and see if the rainwater has drained yet. If so, we’ll walk there after the Bicycle Trip. If it hasn’t drained, we will return to school after our visit to the Bicycle Trip and do some Force and Motion activities in and outside of the classroom.

8:30-8:45 Get bag lunches, science notebooks and backpacks
8:45-10:00 At the Bicycle Trip
10:00-12:00 At Central Park (or classroom)

Thank you to Wendy, Jeff and Mickie who have offered to join us on our field trip tomorrow, and to Michelle E for making all the arrangements.

1.10.16

"Today my brother is turning seven. I made him a card. I also have a present for him. We are having a surprise dinner for him at Sushi Garden," explained Marley.

"Today I got my new line number. My line number is six. I like it better than my old one because it's closer to the front. I got my new job and job partner. When it was Math Workshop, I played a subtraction game. It was fun," reported Layla.

Wow! What a great week! The Sea Class participated in several Tribes activities including a kind of PE game called "That's Me; That's Us!" Students 'identified' as people who have touched snow, like chard, make their best effort to cooperate, who think of themselves as working towards leadership, etc. We found so many things that we have in common! I was very impressed by the 'I used to; Now I am' poems the students wrote; one of my favorite stanzas is "I used to play in the whitewash; Now I ride the face." What a way to exemplify growth! The next day we wrote a class poem called "We used to; Now we..." One of my favorites is "We used to need supervision during yoga, but now we can lead sun salutations on our own." Amazing reflection and appreciation for our progress and growth!

¡Guauu!

Next week we embark on our first week of Force and Motion; we will begin with exploring with pendulums and work into exploring simple machines. The first week of February is our first week of Multi-Age fun; the Sea classroom will make CATAPULTS! I'm so excited! I'll attach the unit plan with the email link to this blog...

In Writers Workshop the Sea group has begun rehearsing and organizing expository writing. For the first piece, writers are choosing a topic on which they are experts, and the second published piece will be on a Force and Motion topic like a specific simple machine, how motion and force affect human lives, or explains and discusses the significance of a scientific issue as it relates to everyday life.

Readers are learning how to manage reading non-fiction texts with tables of contents, indexes, charts and graphs, pictures and captions, and glossaries. Students are learning to SLOW DOWN their reading, ask questions, make notes, categorize information, and apply the Habits of Mind (Connection, Evidence, Relevance, Point of View, and Supposition) to what they are reading.

In Math this week, students will construct sundials as a means of learning to tell time, understand elapsed time, and the development of humans' understanding of time over millennia. Over the course of the trimester, we'll learn about analog and digital clocks, timelines, and the mechanics of clocks. Of course, we'll continue with sharing strategies for solving word problems, practice our mental math skills, and learn and play LOTS of games that will introduce and support our understanding of place value, subtraction, and working with equal groups (multiplication and division).
