10.25.15

10.19.15  This afternoon at Choice, I made a picture of a dog. It had long brown ears and a black nose. I also made a blue cootie catcher, but I haven't finished it,” dictated Somanna.
10.22.15  “Today, I drew some hearts and flowers,” said Xochitl.
10.23.15  Today, I did courses. I did holiday crafts. We are making a haunted house for Halloween,” reported Zuki.
Oh my goodness! Last week was so intense with the field trip, school pictures, and two emergency drills in one day!
This upcoming week promises more adventure. Teacher Michelle will out on Wednesday AND Friday. Julie and Anita will be in the classroom on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. On Tuesday and Thursday, the Sea Class will participate in community building with our buddy classes during the Theme time, and on Friday morning when Anita is with the class, the whole school will do its traditional Halloween parade, Earth songs, and Monster Mash.
We haven’t been taking many pictures for the blog lately; it seems that every moment has been super packed for me, and I haven’t even had time to snap a few photos!
I am looking forward meeting with the adult family members November 20-24 for our Family-Teacher Conferences. There is a sign up sheet outside the classroom door, or you can call, text, or email me with the time slot you want. First come, first served! Claudia Coto, our School Community Coordinator will translate for these meetings, and usually does not work on Mondays, so if a Spanish translator is requested, we should try for a Friday or Tuesday conference time.

10.19.15

A few things to remember for this week:

Tuesday, October 20, everyone needs to be at school by 6:30 so we can leave in time to catch the 9:30 ferry from Pier 41

For the trip, dress your children in layers and pack extra food and water; it will be a long day with plenty of built in opportunities for snacking

School pictures will be Thursday, October 22. If you wish to order packages, please have the order forms completed and with your child on that day.

"Today at Choice, I looked through the Lego bin and found a few pieces which I put together. Then, we made an arena out of Magnetiles and played table hockey. We could only use our breath to push the puck around," said Ronan.

“This morning, we looked at our crayon drawings from yesterday. We found that we think the drawings with more color are more beautiful, like our class is made up of a lot of different colors, ideas, beliefs, and ages. Together, our class is beautifully different,” reflected Michelle.

“Today Somanna, Bailey's little sister, and I went to our course. I was looking at the other groups for a while. Then I realized what time it was and ran up to my Friday course. I got sidetracked by Ava and Jazzy. Then, I went back downstairs to my group,” explained Samantha.

For our Immigration theme, the students have been putting together great little skits to act out the scenes from the book Kai’s Journey to Golden Mountain this past week. We’ve been doing this to try to understand what immigrants might have felt or experienced as they traveled from China to Angel Island, and ultimately to their new homes in the 1930s. On Tuesday at the Angel Island Visitor’s Center and Immigration Station, students will learn more about the real people that traveled for weeks on ships and may have spent days, weeks, or months on the island waiting to be officially accepted into the United States.

This week, our writers will learn to assess their own writing, and how to offer “friendly feedback” to other young writers. 1. Listen 2. Compliment 3. Ask questions to invoke revision
1. Escuchar Piropo 2. 3. Haga preguntas para invocar la revisión

Later this week, we will begin our Trees of Life to show our family members and ancestors in a traditional Mexican clay sculpture. If you want to help prep clay slabs, come play with me after school on Wednesday, October 21 in Room 3!

"Today at Choice I did Japanese painting. I copied a picture out of a book. I painted two pictures. When I was done it was time to clean up. We cleaned up very quickly," reported Omi.

"Today at Friday Courses, I did team challenges. We had to go from one poly spot to another poly spot, and you couldn't run out of poly spots. First, we won because we tried the following idea: when we ran out of poly spots the person in the back passed the extras to the front on our way from the asphalt to the grass," explained Otis.

Vamos a aprender a:

Thank you to everyone who danced with me at the Slugs and Roses concert at Kuumbwa on Friday. Our thanks to the artists, the venue, and all the people it took to plan and organize this fun community building and fundraising event! One of our very own families donated their time and talents to open this perfect way to end a long week: grooving on the dance floor with friends! Here's a little taste of the evening:

We had a great time making collages from maps during Multi-Age Week. Soon, I'll put together a 'collage of collage' for the hallway. Before students began their Reading Buddy art pieces, we reviewed three map features: scale, compass rose, and key or legend. Then, we discussed why people do art. Sometimes they make art to convey feelings or ideas. The students were asked to choose an intention for their piece, and at the end of each day, students revealed their collages and announced their intentions: idea or feeling.

Next week in Theme we will prepare for our October 20 field trip to Angel Island by reading two books about immigrants from China in the 1850s and 1930s. The students will perform brief vignettes from the books in order to begin 'feeling' the anticipation and excitement of starting life in a new land.

During Readers Workshop, readers have begun to participate in Literature Discussions where each reader shares the daily summaries she has written, and the other readers offer a compliment or question. The student facilitator is tasked with making sure that every other reader participates. After one or two more weeks of becoming more comfortable with this format, we will move on using the Habits of Mind to guide our comments and questions about the shared summaries.

And away we go!
Vamenos!

Overview:
Central elementary, a school in transition with an increasingly diverse student body, decided to focus this school year on diversity.
I wanted to help the 2nd- and 3rd-graders understand the concept of diversity and why they should celebrate it. Inspired by The Crayon Box that Talked (Random House, ISBN# 0679886117, $12.95), a story by Shane Derolf and Michael Letzig, I used a drawing exercise to help students discover the value of diversity.
I provided each student with two sheets of drawing paper, then allowed each student to pick out one crayon from a box I provided. I then asked them to draw a picture with only the single crayon. After about five minutes, I asked the students to take out their own boxes of crayons and draw another picture on the second sheet of paper; they could use as many different colors as they wished. When they finished coloring, I asked them the following questions:
Which picture do you like best? Why? Which picture would you like to display in your classroom, the hallway, at home?
Invariably, the students preferred the pictures drawn with the whole box of crayons. I said, "What a boring world it would be if we were all alike — like the picture drawn with only one crayon. The diversity in the world makes it like a wonderful box of crayons with endless colors."
Next, I read them The Crayon Box that Talked. To continue the discussion, I asked, "Wasn't it silly for the crayons not to like each other just because of their color? Each crayon had something special to offer to the picture — green for the grass, blue for the sky, yellow for the sun." The children agreed, and I asked them to brainstorm the reasons it is important to accept people who are different from us, recording their responses on the board.
In conclusion, I read a passage from an unknown author: "We could learn a lot from crayons. ... (They) all are different colors, but they all exist very nicely in the same box."
