4.10.16

Good evening Monarch Families! With only about 40 days of school left, we will pack in the fun! We will begin the week with some Positive Discipline activities to remind ourselves of the community we strive to be: finding and making connections, sharing stories, and working toward solutions that benefit all. “It’s a PROCESS,” my good friend Tatia always said as we worked through challenges in our lives and relationships.

This trimester, Sea Class students will take on a higher level of responsibility for systems like Class Meeting facilitation and correcting the blog on the white board. We will continue our work as Citizen Scientists by visiting the Branciforte Creek on a weekly basis to monitor the wildlife as part of the Biodiversity Group’s PEEK program. Students will learn to take digital photographs of wildlife (plants, insects, amphibians, birds, etc.), tag the photos, and upload the data into TBG’s Global Wildlife database. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even discover a new species!

In Communication Workshop, writers will embark on writing speeches, letters, and essays that use evidence to convince various audiences about an opinion or perspective. Last year, writers wrote book reviews and used textual evidence to make a claim about a character (like Mercy Watson is a spoiled pig). This year, the range of topics will be wider, as will the formats for communicating students’ ideas, judgments, and opinions. In parallel, students in Readers Workshop will each choose a book that interests them and write a structured book report that incorporates elements of literature for those choosing fictional pieces. Those choosing non-fiction texts will follow a different framework and write about how the textual features support the authors’ message and writer’s perspective.

We have a fun project waiting for us in Math Workshop: Gingerbread Village! Together we will learn about measurement (area, perimeter, etc.) and geometry (shapes, symmetry, etc.) by building a city from recycled paperboard, so please start sending in empty cereal and other paper boxes. I had a bunch saved up over spring break, but they were recycled before I could get them to school! We will have ‘regular’ math days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Mondays and Fridays will be our ‘project’ days. This trimester, CGI problems, games, number talks, and other activities will persist in strengthening students’ application of addition and subtraction in various situations, and we will continue to build conceptual understanding of multiplication, division, and fractions in preparation for deeper study in the Ocean math group next fall.

As for Theme, the students and I have been exploring topics and skills that are interesting and accessible to the class as a whole. This is tricky with the wide range of experience and interest in the Sea class! Several students are interested in learning about robotics; others are intrigued by the Titanic; and still others are wondering about artists and their art. We will have at least one more good discussion before choosing a shared field of study. Our most likely choices are moments in American history that have shaped our current culture (which COULD include art and artists); a theme based on the classroom activities at the anti-bias organization called Teaching Tolerance; and an in-depth study of games of all sorts (rules, fairness, safety, teams, and motivation). I believe that any of these topics will provide rich soil for growing awareness of social justice issues, equity, and activism. I will send more information as we narrow our choices and build a learning plan that includes Essential Questions, assessments, and learning activities like interviewing, exploring, playing, and creating.
