We are in the homestretch, nearing the end of the fall trimester. This trimester seems to have gone by so fast; wasn't it just yesterday that the students gave their summer presentations and met their job partners? 
Estamos en la recta final, llegando al final del trimestre de otoño. Este trimestre parece haber ido tan rápido. ¿No fue ayer que los estudiantes dieron sus presentaciones de verano y se reunieron con sus socios de trabajo?

Estos últimos cuatro meses han estado llenos de mucho aprendizaje: acerca de las razones por las que emigran; algunos de los desafíos que enfrentan los inmigrantes en sus nuevos hogares; y algunos de los conocimientos y habilidades inmigrantes traen consigo. Nos hemos centrado en los inmigrantes de las regiones de Asia en la década de 1890 a 1920, y las personas que llegaron a Estados Unidos desde Europa, África y el Medio Oriente en los años 1900 a 1940. These past four months have been filled with so much learning: about the reasons people immigrate; some of the challenges immigrants face in their new homes; and some of the knowledge and skills immigrants bring with them. We focused on immigrants from Asian regions in the 1890s to 1920s, and people who came to the United States from Europe, African, and the Middle East in the 1900s to 1940s. We hosted guest speakers who shared their experiences of immigrating from Central America and the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. We are completing Trees of Life in the Mexican tradition with painted ceramics that celebrate the members of our families.

Next, the students will explore their own ancestries by working in multi-age groups on Heritage Faire kiosks where visitors can learn about the cultural attributes of global regions. Students will prepare items of the regions like flags, food, art, and offer information about the languages, inventions, governments, and money of the regions. The Heritage Faire will be the central activity at the Learning Celebration on Wednesday, December 16. EVERY FAMILY IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND AND SUPPORT THEIR STUDENT'S LEARNING. Attendance at Learning Celebrations is not 'optional'; Monarch is a school that expects every family to honor the work the students do each day. IF NECESSARY, ADJUST YOUR WORK SCHEDULES IN ORDER TO ENSURE YOUR ATTENDANCE at the Learning Celebration.

It was so gratifying to see all their hard work we’ve all been doing since September (learning about which people came and comes to America; how and why people come to the US; how immigrants change the places they move to; and why it’s important to learn about immigration and our family histories) come together in our Ellis Island Simulation. Thank you to everyone for getting in the spirit by dressing up, contributing expertise, and lending support to the ‘actors’ and ‘directors’ of our improvisational theater. I appreciate the positive feedback and when family members asked after the project/group event, and not just about their child’s experience. As part of a community, we understand that it takes the participation of every member to make a rich, memory-making experience for EVERY learner.
Fue tan gratificante ver todo su trabajo duro que todos hemos estado haciendo desde septiembre (el aprendizaje sobre el que la gente venía y viene a América, ¿cómo y por qué la gente viene a los EE.UU., ¿cómo los inmigrantes cambian los lugares se trasladan a, y por qué es importante aprender acerca de la inmigración y nuestras historias familiares) se unen en nuestra isla de Ellis Simulación. ¡Gracias a todos por conseguir en el espíritu por vestirse, aportando conocimientos y prestar apoyo a los "actores" y "directores" de nuestro teatro de improvisación. Agradezco la retroalimentación positiva y cuando los familiares preguntaron después del evento proyecto / grupo, y no sólo sobre la experiencia de su hijo. Como parte de una comunidad, entendemos que se necesita la participación de todos los miembros para hacer una rica experiencia, la memoria de decisiones para CADA alumno.
I didn’t get to take any pictures, but I’ve seen a few on Facebook; if you posted pictures on your FB page, would you please also post them to the Monarch Community School Families FB page? Kaitlin and Nicola took the ‘official’ photos of the traveling companions that will go in the portfolios with each student’s written reflection assessment. The students’ passports will go in their memory boxes for the Fall 2015 term.

So, this week is all about preparing for family conferences; teachers have been spending 15-30 minutes with each student to plan for conferences, as well as choosing and planning for the completion of both academic and social goals for the year. These goals will be shared with the adults at their conference time with the homeroom teacher. PLEASE BRING THE COMPLETED FAMILY INTERVIEW SHEET that was sent home on November 6. If Angie, our Classroom Parent, or Claudia Coto, our Community Coordinator, have contacted you to schedule a conference, please contact them as soon as possible. If you would like Claudia to interpret Spanish and English, please contact her REALLY as soon as possible!

“Today at Choice, we did choice outside. I played in the playground. I played tag with Xochitl and it was fun. It was super hot and sunny, and that made me thirsty. Then, Michelle said to come inside,” reported Alison.
“Today at Choice, I didn't Magetiles with Zuki and Somanna. I played Magetiles for a little bit but I had to do my family tree. I messed up on my family tree. I started over and made it again. When I was done, I had to clean up,” reported Bailey.
“Today at Choice, I played Magnetiles with Zuki. Then, it was time to clean up,” reported Felicia.
There has been a whole lotta reporting going on!

This upcoming week will be a doozy! Not only is there a holiday on Wednesday, November 14, but the week will end with a full morning Ellis Island arrival simulation/ Kaitlin Gaffney will be our official documentarian on Friday, but we invite everyone who wants to participate in the preparation from 9:00-10:00 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, or Friday 8:00-12:00, to please join in the fun.

Last Friday, your student brought home a letter with information about the role she or he will play on November 13. We encourage families to prepare a costume for Friday in order to support students’ full-immersion into the experience.

If re-enacting the experiences of 12 million immigrants from Europe, the Middle East, and Central and South America wasn’t enough, the Sea and Ocean classes will finish up two weeks of collecting data to add to Litterati’s global database. In addition to photographing and GPS tagging trash on our campus, students are also recording types and frequency of trash on paper. After these two weeks, we’ll analyze our data, identify incipient trash types, and work towards an awareness and change plan to reduce the type or amount of trash in our schoolyard.
Next, the students may choose to join the thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations that have committed refusing to use plastic straws. Presentations to other classes at Monarch and BSSC may be in our future, as well!
